Form and nature is the core thesis of Beyond-the-Algorithm thinking concerning two layers and the asymmetry of their relation: the world divides into form (the phenomenal layer — everything that can be observed, imitated, and statistically counted) and nature (the being layer — the generative mechanism that lies behind appearances and brings them forth). The thesis holds that no path setting out from form — be it statistical, logical, or one of intellectual understanding — can ever arrive at nature; the projection from nature into form is non-logical and one-directional, and so to stand inside form and try to deduce nature is a structural dead knot. This single thesis cuts into two seemingly unrelated domains at once — the limits of present-day AI, and the question of awakening in spiritual practice — and asserts that both are facing one and the same fault line.
The Divide Between Form and Nature
In this thesis, form names the entire layer of appearance — everything presented, everything that can be sensed and copied — while nature names the generative mechanism behind any regularity, the thing that lets the appearance happen at all. The relation between the two is asymmetric: form can be observed, taken apart, and recombined without end, yet from it one can never reason backward to the nature that generated it. Present-day AI is stuck precisely on this dividing line — “today’s AI has reached the very limit of the layer of form — it can imitate every appearance. But it has not touched nature — the generative mechanism behind the regularities.” The more lifelike the imitation, the easier it is to be fooled into thinking the fault line has been crossed, when in fact the crossing has never taken place. This judgment — that AI fills in the phenomenal layer without ever touching the generative mechanism — is the inner and outer face of AI Is a Machine of Probabilistic Permutation: It Only Fills In the Phenomenal Layer and Is Never Itself Inspired.
Today’s AI has reached the very limit of the layer of “form” — it can imitate every appearance. But it has not touched “nature” — the generative mechanism behind the regularities. This is exactly the fault line you, as a practitioner, would be naturally sensitive to.
Evolution Happens Only in Form; Nature Does Not Stir
From the divide follows a further judgment about “evolution”: however fast the models iterate, what occurs is only an expansion within the layer of form — the layer of nature stays untouched from first to last. The model “has learned the pattern of reasoning, not how to truly reason” — what it acquires is the way reasoning looks on the surface as a behavior, not reasoning itself. In other words, the growth of capability is the encryption and unfurling of the space of appearances, not a turnover of the generative mechanism. This distinction gives questions like “is AI really thinking?” a definite form: evolution can extend without limit across form, yet it can never, by extension alone, vault over into nature.
The essence of how models evolve — the evolution happens at the layer of “form,” while the layer of “nature” does not stir in the slightest… The model has learned the “pattern” of reasoning, not how to truly reason.
Correlation Is Not Causation
The fault line between form and nature has, in the language of AI, an exact counterpart — the gulf between correlation and causation. What present-day AI has found is only correlation, not causation, and this gulf cannot be filled in by piling on more statistics: “strictly speaking, it is only correlation, not causation… a purely statistical path can never cross the gulf from correlation to causation.” Correlation belongs to form (an observable pattern of co-occurrence); causation belongs to nature (the mechanism that generates the co-occurrence). Statistics is an operation internal to form, and however refined it becomes it is still circling within form, unable to reach across to nature. This judgment supplies an epistemological counter-reference to Every Stirring Thought Creates Cause and Effect: The Causal Web — AI can fit the projection of the causal web, but it cannot enter the source of the projection.
Strictly speaking, it is only correlation, not causation… a purely statistical path can never cross the gulf from correlation to causation.
The Isomorphism of Intellectual Understanding and Awakening
The most charged step of this thesis is to judge AI’s fault line and the practitioner’s fault line as isomorphic. The proposal runs: “the fault line of ‘correlation vs. causation’ and the fault line of ‘intellectual understanding vs. awakening’ in practice may be isomorphic.” In practice, intellectual understanding is a conceptual grasp of a truth (belonging to form); awakening is the direct realization of how it is in itself (belonging to nature); reading any number of descriptions of water, and tasting a mouthful of water yourself, belong to two different layers. AI’s failure to reach causation by approaching it through correlation, and the practitioner’s failure to reach awakening by approaching it through intellectual understanding, are seen as the same structural crack showing itself in two domains. This isomorphism is what connects To Apply Effort Is Already to Err: Awakening Is Seeing More Clearly, Not Believing More Deeply and What AI Cannot Do Is Worth the Most: The Moat Is Cost, Awakening, and “Becoming” under this thesis.
The fault line of “correlation vs. causation” and the fault line of “intellectual understanding vs. awakening” in practice may be isomorphic.
Karma as Prior Knowledge
To give the form-nature isomorphism a finer mechanical description, Buddhist concepts are mapped onto Friston’s predictive-processing framework: karma approximates prior knowledge; the non-substantiality of the self approximates the model’s ongoing reconstruction of itself; suffering approximates the anxiety of self-confirmation; meditation approximates the switching between the two modes of CONFIRM and REVISE. This mapping translates the practitioner’s vocabulary at the layer of nature into the operational language of predictive processing, with the aim of showing that the workings of the Awaring and the workings of a predictive model can be brought into structural correspondence. The mapping, however, is itself still a description at the layer of form — it can illuminate the shape of the fault line, but it is not the same as crossing it; this limit echoes the treatment of the difference between “description” and “the ontological” in The Original Awaring: Ontological Consciousness vs. Ordinary Consciousness.
Karma ≈ prior knowledge; the non-substantiality of the self ≈ the model’s ongoing reconstruction; suffering ≈ the anxiety of self-confirmation; meditation ≈ the switch between CONFIRM and REVISE modes.
The Reality Layer Is Non-Logical to Begin With
Why must the path from form to nature necessarily fail? The root cause is this: the reality layer where nature resides is itself non-logical. Since the reality layer is non-logical, to judge a piece of trans-logical text pointing at the real by the standard of “logical consistency” is a category error — to measure nature with the ruler of form, where the deviation measured is merely the unfitness of the instrument, not a defect of nature. Further, in the phenomenal layer no event whatsoever happens with one-hundred-percent certainty: “It’s like when I close the door and open it again — is the world outside still the same? Not necessarily. As long as I haven’t seen it, it remains uncertain.” This suspension of certainty shares one source with Everything Is Manifested by the Awaring, and it reduces logic itself to a local rule of the form layer rather than a bridge through to nature.
At the reality layer it is non-logical to begin with… It’s like when I close the door and open it again — is the world outside still the same? Not necessarily. As long as I haven’t seen it, it remains uncertain.
The Shadow Play: No Real Painting Can Hang on a Mirage
The fault line between form and nature carries one further extreme consequence at the level of epistemology: the very instruments used to observe form — the senses and the brain — themselves belong to form. The shadow play and the mirage serve as figures: dreams, the television, the scene before your eyes — all are, in essence, information passed through the senses to the brain; and if the senses and the brain are themselves illusion, then everything built upon them is false — “no real painting can ever hang on a mirage.” So a person “keeps searching for answers within the false, keeps thrashing about within the false,” and the “shadow play” runs ever more splendidly without ever piercing that screen. This means that polishing the form layer alone (making the shadow play more lifelike) can never reach nature; the only way out is to pierce the screen itself — the direction pointed to by To Know the Illusion Is to Leave It: To See Through Is to Be Free.
If the senses and the brain are themselves illusion, then everything is false — “no real painting can ever hang on a mirage.” We keep searching for answers within the false, thrashing about within the false… The “shadow play” runs ever more splendidly, yet it never pierces that screen.
Purusha: You Are the Screen, Not the Film
The thesis of form and nature finally comes to rest on the relation between the Witness (Purusha) and the seen (Prakriti), giving this entry its most distilled picture. The screen and the film serve as the figure: you are not any content that can be thought of or be aware of (those are all form, the film), but the pure awareness that is witnessing it all (nature, the screen) — “you are not anything you can think of — you are the one who is thinking. The film ends; the screen remains. You are the screen.” From this follows a key claim: the Witness was never truly joined to matter.
You are not anything you can think of — you are the one who is thinking. The film ends; the screen remains. You are the screen.
In this picture, Purusha and Prakriti appear to form a dualistic opposition, yet in truth awareness was never truly stained by matter; the so-called “bondage” is only an illusion. Liberation, therefore, is not understood as “separating” the two, but as recognizing that they were never truly joined in the first place. This pushes the asymmetry of form and nature to its limit: nature (the Witness) is forever outside, before, and above form (the film); it cannot be explained by form precisely because it never belonged to form and never fell into form.
Purusha was never truly joined to Prakṛti; the so-called “bondage” is only an illusion. Liberation is not “separation,” but the recognition that there was never a true joining at all.
