AI cannot awaken is a proposition concerning the boundary of artificial intelligence. It holds that in an age when AI keeps swallowing one human capacity after another, awakening — the act of seeing through, in one’s own awareness, to the true face of the world — is the one thing AI can never replace and that must be accomplished by oneself. Paired with this, meditation, as the practical method that leads toward awakening, points precisely at the inner domain AI cannot touch, and for that very reason becomes a long-termist direction that “rises with the tide of AI rather than tracking AI’s technology.” The original formulation: “The thing AI will never be able to do is awaken — and I must.”

Awakening Is the Boundary of AI

The proposition is, first of all, a judgment of demarcation: the expansion of AI’s capabilities is not boundless; it has a clear edge, and that edge is precisely awakening. The statement is plain:

The thing AI will never be able to do is awaken — and I must. And there are things that rise with the tide of AI, rather than tracking AI’s technology.

There are two layers here. The first is a qualitative claim — awakening is placed within AI’s blind spot. The second is a rule for action — one should do the things that “rise with the tide of AI,” not the things that “track AI’s technology.” The two are in truth one: to track AI’s technology is to place yourself within AI’s range, where sooner or later you are caught and matched; whereas with something like awakening, which lies beyond AI’s reach, the stronger and more widespread AI becomes, the more its scarcity and value are thrown into relief — it “rises with the tide.” This valuation shares a root with What AI Cannot Do Is Worth the Most: The Moat Is Cost, Awakening, and “Becoming”, and runs along the same logic as Depth of Thought Cannot Be Replaced: AI Filters Out the Shallow Influencers, and the Darker the Sky the Brighter the Stars, where AI filters out the shallow and the scarce stand out all the more.

Why AI Can Never Fill In Awakening

AI cannot awaken — not for want of compute or model size, but as a matter of structural impossibility. On this understanding, AI is a probabilistic device of permutation and combination: within the existing information of the phenomenal layer it generates the most likely next symbol, yet it is never thereby “inspired,” and it does not itself stand within “understanding.” This point is laid out on its own in AI Is a Machine of Probabilistic Permutation: It Only Fills In the Phenomenal Layer and Is Never Itself Inspired. Awakening happens precisely beyond the phenomenal layer: it is not a better combination of information but the leap in which awareness itself pierces through form and beholds the real. AI can approach a “description of awakening” without limit, yet the event of “awakening” can never occur within it — just as no recipe, however exact, is the same as a mouthful of food.

The same judgment has another version, given in English, gathering the irreplaceability of the matter into a single concrete instant:

if there is anything that artificial intelligence will never be able to do, it is this.

The “this” points to the moment a person is drawn back to the center and turns to behold themselves — a distinctly human inner act. A machine can imitate the language of self-beholding, but there is no one present to do the beholding; and practice is precisely the cultivation of that “one who is present.” This shares its method-root with Awareness Reveals Self-Nature: Meditation Is a Finer-Grained Turning Inward.

Meditation Is a Direction AI Cannot Replace

If awakening is the destination, meditation is the road that leads there. Precisely because the destination falls beyond AI’s range, meditation as the path also acquires a special standing for the age — it is one of the few practical directions that can “rise with the tide of AI.” On this basis, meditation is established as a direction worth long-term investment:

And from this I will draw out “meditation”… this channel must be made, because it truly represents the future, it is a kind of long-termism, and it is also something AI cannot replace.

This channel must be made, because it truly represents the future, it is a kind of long-termism, and it is also something AI cannot replace.

The judgment here is threefold and layered: meditation “represents the future” (trend), is “long-termism” (a structure of time), and is “something AI cannot replace” (a moat). All three point to a single conclusion: in an age when capabilities are rapidly commoditized and flattened, only by sinking your roots into the inner domain AI cannot reach will your investment escape being zeroed out by the next turn of technology. This descends in one line from Long-Termism: Abstraction Reaches the Essence, and the Process Is to Be Savored — long-termism is reliable precisely because what it bets on is the abstract essence, not the perishable technique. Using Illusion to Cultivate Through Illusion: AI as an Accelerant of Practice

This proposition does not cast AI as the enemy of practice; on the contrary, it treats it as a catalyst. Within this framework, the entire world of content — indeed the entire phenomenal world — is itself “illusion”: forms made by the Awaring; this is Everything Is Manifested by the Awaring. And the essence of practice is to cultivate within this fabric of illusion, using illusion itself, and finally to see through illusion as such:

Is there anything cooler than proving that this world is something you created? Practice itself is using illusion to cultivate through illusion until awakening; AI has pushed the efficiency of this content world to its extreme, making you realize all the faster what genuine practice really is.

Here the logic reverses. By pushing the efficiency of content production and information flow to its extreme, AI means that the “illusion” of the phenomenal layer comes flooding in at an unprecedented density and speed. When everything can be generated, copied, supplied without limit, a person collides all the sooner with the question — are any of these really real? What is it that cannot be generated, cannot be replaced? AI thus becomes a mirror that reveals the demon: by playing out the illusion of the phenomenal layer to its extreme, it forces one to turn one’s gaze toward the reality layer all the earlier. The stronger AI grows, the fuller the illusion-pole of “using illusion to cultivate through illusion” becomes, and the more sharply the awakening-pole is thrown into contrast.

The Response-Mode of Awareness: A Case of Being Moved by Probabilistic Generation

The proposition also carries a subtle footnote, touching on the divide between “understanding” and “awareness.” A paradox surfaced in firsthand experience: knowing full well that AI is merely probabilistic token generation, with no real understanding whatsoever — and being moved by the content it generates all the same. This is not taken as having been deceived, but read as a piece of evidence about the very nature of awareness:

I know full well that Claude is probabilistic token generation, and I am moved all the same. This itself proves: the experience of being moved does not depend on whether the object truly understands, but on the response of awareness itself to a pattern.

This observation does not contradict “AI cannot awaken”; it reinforces it. Being moved happens on the side of awareness, not on the side of the object. AI can trigger the response of awareness, yet it does not possess that awareness; it can be the “pattern” that is responded to, but it is never the “one who is present” issuing the response. In other words, AI can be the mirror, the prop, even the fuse in a scene of practice — but the awareness reflected in the mirror always belongs to the human. What awakening is meant to settle is precisely this subject of awareness that issues the response and yet can never be outsourced to any machine. Here it forms the inside and outside of one coin with Awareness Reveals Self-Nature: Meditation Is a Finer-Grained Turning Inward.

Awakening as the Backdrop of the Age

Pulling the view back from individual practice, this proposition connects to a larger picture of the age: a collective awakening that may be underway. On the market and on shifts in value, the conjecture runs:

When people begin to give up the chase after illusory numbers and turn instead toward the tangible and the real, the phase transition of the market may be only a projection of a larger awakening.

On this reading, the collective turn of people from “illusory numbers” toward “tangible reality” and the practitioner’s individual turn from the phenomenal layer toward the reality layer are the same movement, projected at different scales. AI’s acceleration in manufacturing illusion — and in exposing the illusoriness of illusion — may be exactly one of the external forces driving this larger awakening. This is in tune with the judgment of a movement “from the illusory to the real” in Precious Metals Are the Bridge Between Eras: Gold and Silver Filter Cognition as the Old Frameworks Fail, and it dovetails with the view in The Meditative Acceptance of AI: AI’s Evolution Too Is Within Causality, and AI Is the Great Examination of the Age that places AI within causality and the great examination of the era. The proposition draws no forced conclusion at this scale; it merely sets the projection alongside — whether a great awakening is truly happening, it leaves open.
